This car started out as a typical 40ā box car, made for carrying general goods. When made obsolete by larger cars with greater capacity, it was not uncommon for these cars to be repurposed for other uses on the railroad. Such was the case for this boxcar to be fitted with extra doors and windows to become a Kitchen Car for the L&Nās Maintenance of Way department (MoW). When track crews would have to spend days at a time repairing track or wayside infrastructure, the kitchen car was where their meals for the day would be prepared and served.
Today, the kitchen car is a source of storage space for our shop.
